A travel hat shouldn’t ask you to choose between looking like yourself and packing light. Most do. The HOBO, handmade in our Florentine Atelier by a small team of young artisans, doesn’t. It’s a crushable fedora hat that travels the way you actually do: into overhead bins, onto night trains, through rain, into restaurants where the rest of your outfit still has to hold up.
We make it here, a few hundred meters from the historic Manifattura Tabacchi that now houses our workshop. Every HOBO passes through the same hands, the same wooden blocks, the same slow rhythm of steam and pressure and finishing. It’s the travel hat we actually wanted to own. So we built it.
The Story Behind the HOBO Hat

The HOBO takes its name and inspiration from the American hobos of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: restless travelers who moved across the country by train, carrying only what they needed and embracing a life shaped by freedom, resilience, and constant movement.
For SUPERDUPER, the HOBO represents that same spirit of exploration. It was designed for people who are always on the move: those who travel light, seek new experiences, and value pieces that can adapt to different journeys.
Its crushable construction makes it easy to pack and reshape, turning it into a practical companion for weekends away, long-haul trips, and everyday escapes. But beyond functionality, the HOBO reflects an idea of travel that feels deeply connected to our brand: moving freely, staying curious, and carrying a sense of adventure wherever you go.
More than a travel hat, the HOBO embodies a mindset, one inspired by the independent spirit of the American hobos and reimagined through SUPERDUPER’s contemporary perspective on craftsmanship and design.
What Makes a Travel Hat Actually Worth Packing
Most buying guides for the best travel hat will tell you durable travel hats share four traits. They’re right. We’d add that most hats on those lists only deliver two.
A real travel hat has to recover from being crushed. Not folded neatly. Crushed. Shoved into a bag, sat on in a taxi, compressed under a laptop case. If it doesn’t spring back with a shake and a steam, it’s a fashion hat that happens to be light.
It has to be light enough that you forget you packed it. Somewhere around 100 grams is the sweet spot for fur-felt; heavier than that and it starts competing with real items in your carry-on. It has to hold its shape in weather. Rain, humid planes, sun. A hat that warps at the first change of climate isn’t travel-ready; it’s living-room-ready.
How a Crushable Fedora Is Actually Built

There’s a reason the crushable fedora became the category it is. When it’s made correctly, it bends where it should and stiffens where it must. When it’s made badly, it just… goes soft.
Why wool felt is the material that actually packs
Wool felt (specifically fur felt, worked slowly) has a kind of memory the other materials don’t. You can pack it flat, pull it out hours later, steam it briefly over a kettle, and it remembers its own shape. This is why every serious packable fedora on the market is built from felt, and why we use only the highest premium level of it.
Inside the HOBO: Our Travel Hat
The HOBO is designed for the way traveling has actually become. Shorter brim, so it passes under an aircraft overhead bin without bending and sits clean over a passport. Soft crown that takes a pinch or wears flat. Neutral color range that works with a jacket, a coat, or just a t-shirt in July.
It’s unisex by intent, not as an afterthought: the shapes were designed to read well on a broad range of head shapes and face structures. Sizes run across the full range, and we offer a virtual fitting from the atelier if you want a second opinion before you buy.
What comes with every HOBO
Every HOBO ships with a travel kit: a soft bag designed to keep the hat protected in luggage, a care sheet written by the artisans who built it, and simple instructions for steaming it back to shape if life happens. Nothing showy. Just the tools that keep a handmade travel hat alive through real use.

Travel-Tested: How to Pack and Wear It

A crushable fedora is not indestructible. It’s recoverable. Those two words are doing real work.
How to pack the HOBO without killing it
Three steps. First, flatten the crown gently with your palm. Don’t fold the brim in half. Second, place it flat at the bottom of your bag with soft items (a sweater, a scarf) layered over the top; nothing hard. Third, when you arrive, set it upright on a flat surface, run steam from a kettle or shower briefly over the crown and brim, and reshape with your fingers. It comes back. That’s the point.
Where a travel hat actually earns its keep
On the plane: short brim slips under the seat in front of you, no damage. In the piazza: sun protection without looking like a tourist. In the restaurant: you take it off, set it crown-down on the banquette, and it behaves. On the train: pull it low, sleep. A good travel hat disappears into the trip. This one does.
