The One Piece Straw Hat: Everything a New Fan Needs to Know
You saw the hat on Netflix. Here is why it matters, where it came from, and why fans treat it as far more than a costume prop.
You just started watching One Piece on Netflix. You noticed the hat. You have questions.
Good. The hat is the entire point.
What is One Piece?
One Piece is the most successful manga in history — over 500 million copies sold worldwide. Created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, it tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate who wants to find the legendary treasure known as the "One Piece" and become the King of the Pirates.
Netflix adapted it into a live-action series. Season 1 arrived in 2023. Season 2 is streaming now. And at the center of it all, on the head of the main character, sits a straw hat.
Why does Luffy wear a straw hat?
Because someone believed in him before anyone else did.
When Luffy was a boy, he met a pirate named Red-Haired Shanks in his home village. Shanks saw something in Luffy — a fire, a stubbornness, something that reminded him of the greatest pirate who ever lived. So he gave the boy his hat.
The deal was simple: "Give it back to me when you become a great pirate."
Luffy has worn the hat every day since. It is not an accessory. It is a contract. A physical reminder of a promise he has not yet fulfilled.
Why do fans care so much about it?
Because the hat is the emotional center of the story.
When Luffy is calm, the hat sits on his head. When he is about to fight, he turns it backward or places it on someone he trusts. When it is damaged, it feels like a wound. Luffy has been offered power, treasure, alliances — and the only thing he has never been willing to give up is the hat.
In a story full of devil fruit powers and mythical weapons, the most powerful object is a piece of woven straw.
That is why fans wear it. Not because it looks cool — although it does — but because it means something. Wearing the straw hat is a way of saying: I understand the promise. I am part of this story.
Where did the hat originally come from?
Before Shanks, the hat belonged to Gol D. Roger — the Pirate King, the only man to ever find the One Piece. Roger wore it during his legendary voyage across the Grand Line.
So when Luffy puts on the straw hat, he is wearing a piece of history that connects him to the most important figure in the One Piece world. He does not know the full weight of that connection yet. But the reader does. And that gap is part of what makes the story so compelling.
What is the hat actually made of?
In the world of One Piece, the hat is woven straw — the kind you would find in a rural fishing village. Nothing precious. Nothing rare. Just natural fibers shaped by hand.
When Netflix needed a real version of this hat for the live-action series, they came to SUPERDUPER — an Italian hat-making studio based in Florence. We have been making hats by hand since 2011, using traditional techniques and natural materials.
The Luffy hat we build is made from natural raffia — a palm fiber that is strong, flexible, and breathable. Each hat is handwoven and shaped by artisans. No machines. No molds. No plastic. It takes time. That is the point.
Eiichiro Oda — the creator of One Piece — personally approved the design. This is the only officially sanctioned Luffy straw hat made with real hat-making craft.
Can you actually buy it?
Yes.
The SUPERDUPER x Netflix One Piece Luffy Hat is available worldwide. It comes in three sizes — S, M, L — and ships from Italy. You can choose between the standard edition and the Gold Box collector's edition, which comes in a special One Piece themed packaging.
With Season 2, we are also introducing the Adventure Edition — the same hat, paired with a dedicated carrying bag for those who want to wear it out in the world, not just keep it on display.
This is not a costume accessory. It is a hat, built the way hats have always been built — by hand, from natural materials, with the care that comes from doing this every single day.
Welcome aboard
One Piece is a story about dreams, loyalty, and the courage to keep going when the sea gets rough. The straw hat is the symbol of all of that — simple on the outside, infinite on the inside.
Now you know why it matters. The rest of the story is waiting for you.
